Heritage Golf Club Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2015
Dear Golfing Friends,
Heritage Golf Club has firmly cemented itself as a true championship golf course following the success of the Inaugural AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in May this year. We have now also been selected to host the most prestigious amateur event the Indian Ocean has to offer – the MCB Indian Ocean Amateur. This is the only event in the region that carries world ranking points for amateur golfers and will see the best local golfing talent take on some great international players from India, France and South Africa. Last year’s tournament was won by Hennie Du Plessis of South Africa (pictured below). The Event will be played from the 23rd – 25th October and spectators are most welcome!!

Benjamin Franklin once said “Do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of”.

Just as timing is so critical in life, we believe so too is it important on the golf course. Whilst we understand that many of you play golf to relax, we also understand that there is nothing worse than having to wait on every shot during your round. To help better manage time at the Heritage Golf Club and to serve you better we are proud to announce that we have partnered with the foremost watch brand in golf today and have installed 4 beautiful clocks from Swiss watchmaker, Rolex. We are extremely proud of our association with Rolex as only the finest golf courses worldwide are bestowed this honour by the premium brand.

More exciting news to report is that we have two new professional golf Ambassadors in Henni Zuel and Mikael Lundberg.

Henni is an English professional golfer and the youngest ever player to join the Ladies European Tour as an amateur. She was a nominee for Britain’s Best Awards for Home Grown Talent and entered the professional Ladies European Tour after turning pro in 2008. Interestingly, she also has Mauritian ties, both her parents are from Mauritius and she still has relatives living here!

Mikael Lundberg
Mikael Lundberg is a Swedish professional golfer with 7 professional victories to his credit including 3 on the European Tour. The most recent of these wins came at the Lyoness Open in 2014 where he defeated Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger in a playoff.

We are thrilled to have them on board flying our flag all over the world and using us as a base for training. If world-class international professionals are choosing Heritage as their resort of choice, shouldn’t you be as well?

Hope to see you on the fairways soon!

Happy golfing!

  Good rotation for more distance

If you use only your arms to complete the back swing then you use only 50% of your power. Most of your power comes from the “Big muscles” (back, torso…) To gain more distance you must rotate your body making sure to keep your spine angle constant.

2 tips to improve your rotation.

1 - Put a club behind your shoulders (left hand on the grip). Try now to point at ball with your grip. Try to line up your left shoulder, your left hand and the ball. (pict 1 and 2)

  2. The baseball swing.

At the top of you back swing your back should face the target and when in your finish position, your chest should face the target. (pict 3 and 4)

You will notice we have started our “spring” aeration program this month. Aeration could be described as “short term pain for long term gain” but is vital to the health of our course; I have included a short U-tube video that best describes the purpose of aeration. We have started with the fairways and rough areas which should be completed by Friday 11th of September and we will start the greens on Monday the 21st, these should be completed by the 23rd. Play will continue as usual and we will keep disruption to a minimum during these operations. Note that all aeration programs are followed by a granular fertiliser program to encourage more growth and quicker recovery.

We have also planted a number of trees on holes 4 and 6 during the last few weeks, namely:
    • Ebony tree – diospyros egrattarum – endemic to Mauritius
    • Café Maron tree – coffea myrtefolia – endemic to Mauritius
    • Bois clous – eugenia lucida – indigenous to Mauritius
    • Bois de rat – tarenna borbonica – endemic to the Mascarenes region
These trees, once they grow, will better frame both holes and add some difficulty especially for the long hitters by simply narrowing the landing area.

That’s it for this month and happy golfing.

September Rules Question
In a stroke play competition, A, B and C were drawn by the Committee to play together starting at 9.00 am. A and B were present at the appointed time. C arrived at 9.02 am, after A and B had teed off, but just in time to play in the correct order. What is the ruling?

Please send your answer to the rules guru, Avinash on golf@heritagegolfclub.mu. The first correct answer will win a complimentary four ball to play at the Heritage Golf Club.
August's Rules Question & Answer
In a stroke play competition, the Committee issues the score cards containing the competitor's handicap in addition to his name and the date. The Committee mistakenly records a competitor's handicap as seven instead of six and this affects the number of strokes received. The error remains unnoticed until after the card is returned, but before the competition has closed. What is the ruling?

The competitor should be disqualified under Rule 6-2b. It is the responsibility of the competitor to ensure that his correct handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned to the Committee.

Congratulations to Paul Lim Fat for winning our August competition. You will receive a voucher to play a round at Heritage Golf Club.
WINNER: Paul Lim Fat
